Ice Breakers
Think about one person in your life who has been influential (someone who has helped you, supported you, etc.). For the next 7-10 minutes, write to that person explaining the impact they've had on you and why you are grateful for them.
Consider having students plan for writing using this structure:
-Dear __________,
-Way that you've impacted me
-What I am grateful for
-Signature
or
-Dear _________,
-You help me...
-Thank you for...
-Name
Stimulus
Show students the following clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHv6vTKD6lg&spfreload=5
For the sake of time, consider only showing the beginning (:18-1:25) and ending (5:38-6:30) portions.
Discussion Drivers
Consider allowing students to take out their cell phones and briefly call the person they wrote to. They can read or talk about their letter.
-How is gratitude linked to happiness?
-Why is it important to share gratitude?
-What are ways we can share gratitude with others?
